Coverage Issues

Verizon is shifting its present CDMA platform to 4G in order to become a dominant mobile internet carrier in US. In spite its huge investment every year on the network maintenance, a lot of Verizon subscribers repeatedly report issues with the lousy and bad network coverage in their home and offices.

Many customers complain that often the coverage map shown by Verizon is not cent percent accurate. They face numerous issues with the signal strength and quality. When they call customer service the representative there condescendingly says that the coverage is excellent in that region and makes several changes in the cell phone settings but, that never worked for the customers. Most of the people say that the service was working fine up till the past. But now, they have started facing frequent problems with calls drops and weak signals and sometimes, the cell phone even failed to ring.

It is true that the building topologies, weather conditions and network congestion can play a vital role in the signal strength but, Verizon has constantly marketed its new technology, which has eventually raised their customer’s expectations from the network. Customers do not expect coverage in elevators or on the mountain but, at least a decent reception in their homes, office and on the streets.

To improve the indoor coverage especially the areas with poor reception, Verizon introduced Femtocells that used compact wireless base stations, which eventually boosted the indoor signal strengths up to 5,000 square feet. This device typically allowed multiple phones to send and receive data at the same time. It also provided broadband connection and transfer of voice signals over the internet.

Using the CDMA and advanced EV DO network, Verizon offered 3G services but their iPhone subscribers suffered coverage issues. Clearly, it was an iPhone’s incompatible antenna’s mess but still, considerable number of Verizon subscribers soared with other provider.

After the launch of 4G LTE service, they have successfully tested HD voice technology for their networks. Their iPhone 4 sales suffered in the beginning but, it picked up the market later. Few iPhone 4 customers have reported instances about the reception quality and the signal loss. It is still not clear whether it is due to the iPhone 4 or the deployment new network technology. One needs to still wait for the Verizon’s answer.
